Badfish Creek II

By on July 1, 2010

Old Stage Road to Highway 59
☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆

A return to the Badfish in slightly higher water brought about much of the fun we had the first go round. Twisty, riffly, rocky and sandy, the Badfish is just an appealing and fun creek to explore.

Date:
July 31, 2010

Class Difficulty:
Riffles

Gauge:
Cooksville: ht/ft: 5.56 | cfs: 134

Recommended Levels:
This is a very recommendable level.

Put-In:
Old Stage Road, Cooksville, Wisconsin
Take-Out:
Highway 59, Yahara River

Time: Put in at 12:30p. Out at 3:30p.
Total Time: 3h
Miles Paddled: 9

What we liked:
This might be the best paddle in Southern Wisconsin.

The water is a little higher than normal (to be expected) and it puts the creek in a different light. Actually, it feels more like a river with some great riffles and (although I can’t classify them myself) light rapids. Due to the rain, there are some obstacles (trees), two that require portaging. I’m sure that’ll be cleaned up once the water goes down. The sandbars are fewer at this level of course but there are rockbars (I’m making that term up) and many little islands to break at.

I don’t however, recommend this paddle for beginners at this level. When it’s running at a normal level I do, but it was very pushy at the put-in and even more so near the end where it meets the Yahara River. But the upside is that it’s a great way to brush up on your turning skills as it’s a very curvy little creek.

We’ve been finding a lot of things on our trips this year. I scored a paddle with a paddle leash attached (no body attached to the other end, thankfully). I also spotted many a muskrat and quite possibly the biggest turtle I’ve ever seen just laying on a sandbar. I thought it was a hubcap with the sun gleaming off of it until it moved.

What we didn’t like:
I’m used to the Chlorine odor now. It reminds me of the public pool. See this Badfish Creek report for further explanation.

If we did this trip again:
Do you want to know what the best paddle on the Badfish is? After taking into account the put-ins, take-outs, sandbars, excitement level, etc., the best trip is Old Stage Road (great put-in which a homeowner graciously mows) to Casey Road (great take-out). It’s a 6.75 mile paddle which is a perfect length for a day trip. Everything after Casey Road is nice but pretty tame (and 1 of the 2 trees that must be portaged is within that stretch). From now on, this is the Badfish paddle.
